PAL Assures Sufficient Jet Fuel Supply Amid Global Concerns

Manila: Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) announced Wednesday that it has secured sufficient jet fuel supply to support its scheduled operations, including long-haul flights, for the foreseeable future. This assurance comes in light of recent concerns expressed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. regarding the potential for airplane groundings due to a possible jet fuel shortage amid the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos highlighted in an interview on Tuesday that the grounding of airplanes is a "distinct possibility" due to potential shortages in jet fuel. He noted that some countries have already imposed restrictions on refueling foreign aircraft, which has forced airlines to ensure they carry enough fuel for return trips.

PAL acknowledged the dynamic nature of global supply conditions and emphasized its commitment to prudent planning. The airline stated that it is working closely with fuel suppliers, industry partners, and government stakeholders to ensure stable and efficient operations over the longer term. This proactive approach aims to mitigate any disruptions that could arise from fluctuating fuel supply conditions.

The price of jet fuel has seen a significant increase, rising from approximately USD89 per barrel before the Middle East conflict to nearly USD200 per barrel. This surge has affected airlines globally, prompting some to adjust their operations.

Earlier, low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific (CEB) announced a temporary suspension and reduced frequencies of some of its routes starting in April. The Gokongwei-led carrier cited the impact of the crisis on global jet fuel prices as the reason for these adjustments. CEB confirmed that it has secured its fuel supply until the end of April and is actively working on arrangements for May and beyond.
