PAFF ‘Benteng Bigas’ Program Launches in Catanduanes to Aid Local Farmers and Fisherfolk

Catanduanes: The distribution of the Presidential Assistance for Farmers and Fisherfolk (PAFF) under the Department of Agriculture (DA) began in Catanduanes, providing financial support to eligible rice and corn farmers within the province. The initiative marks a significant step in assisting the agricultural community in Catanduanes, with at least 1,257 beneficiaries from the municipalities of Pandan and Caramoran receiving PHP2,325 each as part of the initial cash assistance distribution.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PAFF is a government initiative aimed at delivering direct financial assistance to farmers and fisherfolk to mitigate the effects of global market disruptions on their livelihoods and production capabilities. In total, 6,871 farmers and fisherfolk in Catanduanes are expected to benefit from this assistance, which amounts to PHP15.9 million. The remaining 5,614 beneficiaries from other municipalities are anticipated to receive their cash assistance in the upcoming days.

Among the recipients of this assistance was Jovita de Castro from Pandan, who conveyed her appreciation for the government's support, stating, "We thank our President. This is a big help for us." This financial aid reflects the government's commitment to bolstering the agricultural sector in response to global challenges.

In a related development, Catanduanes Governor Patrick Azanza announced through a social media post the forthcoming distribution of 17,400 sacks of rice under the 'Benteng Bigas Meron Na' program within the province. This initiative aims to provide rice at PHP20 per kilogram, reaching down to the barangay level to eliminate the need for travel to Virac for procurement.

The 'Benteng Bigas Meron Na' program is expected to benefit 315 barangays across 11 municipalities, with specific allocations such as 3,097 sacks for Virac and varying amounts for other municipalities. The program allows for a maximum purchase of 10 kilograms per transaction, with priority sectors like senior citizens and solo parents eligible for up to 30 kilograms per month. Other groups, including fisherfolk, jeepney and tricycle drivers, minimum wage earners, and Department of Education personnel, can purchase up to 10 kilograms monthly. Farmers and farm workers, however, can acquire up to 50 kilograms monthly under this program.

This comprehensive approach aims to support local communities by ensuring food security and providing financial relief to those in the agriculture and transportation sectors amidst ongoing economic challenges.
