P61.7-M Illicit Cigarettes Seized, 19 Nabbed in 2-Day Ops

Manila: The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has arrested 19 individuals and seized PHP61.7 million worth of illicit cigarettes in two-day nationwide operations.

According to Philippines News Agency, CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II stated that 10 suspects were arrested and PHP3,248,300 worth of alleged illegal cigarettes were seized in 10 separate raids in Lanao del Norte, Iligan City, Davao City, and Davao del Norte on February 8. The following day, a series of raids in Laguna, Zambales, Batangas, Negros Oriental, Cavite, Misamis Occidental, and Tarlac resulted in the arrest of nine suspects and the seizure of PHP58,538,500 worth of alleged illicit cigarettes. Notably, the CIDG Tarlac Provincial Field Unit confiscated PHP47.5 million worth of illegal cigarettes and three trucks. Meanwhile, CIDG Regional Field Unit 4A seized PHP10,545,000 worth of alleged illegal cigarettes.

Morico noted that the confiscated items lacked the required graphic health warning signs and were found to be unregistered with the Department of Trade and Industry. They also did not meet the documentary stamps requirement of the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the CIDG for their successful operations and commitment to tackling cigarette smuggling in the country.

"This latest accomplishment against cigarette smuggling is proof of the PNP's commitment to dismantle the entire network of illegal operations in the country. And this includes holding the financiers and all the other personalities involved in this illegal activity responsible," Nartatez stated in a separate announcement. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla had earlier identified at least two politicians as financiers of cigarette smuggling.
