Leyte: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is set to develop a PHP50 million provincial office in Leyte, complete with a laboratory and training center, to advance technology-driven solutions in the region. The initiative aims to enhance access to science and innovation resources.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOST Eastern Visayas Regional Director John Glenn Oca±a disclosed that the upcoming three-story facility will house a Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STREAM) laboratory, an Innovation Hub, and an Information and Communications Technology training center. These resources are designed to benefit students, educators, researchers, startups, local governments, and micro, small, and medium enterprises.
Oca±a emphasized the project's potential to make science more practical and relevant to local communities. He stated, "The presence of this facility brings science closer to communities and makes it more responsive and meaningful to the people."
The construction of the facility commenced following a groundbreaking ceremony on January 23, led by Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., alongside DOST and local officials. The new building will be located within the Philippine Science High School complex in Palo and is slated for completion by December 2026.
With its anticipated operational launch in 2027, the hub is expected to broaden access to science and innovation programs, enhance digital and technical skills, and bolster research, entrepreneurship, and local development in Leyte and neighboring provinces. Oca±a further noted, "By bringing laboratories, training, and innovation spaces closer to communities, the facility aims to help improve livelihoods, boost local competitiveness, and support inclusive and sustainable development across Leyte."
