Misamis oriental: Joint law enforcement units on Monday seized mineral ores amounting to more than PHP1.7 million from an alleged illegal mining activity in Misamis Oriental province. A report by the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) identified the suspect as "Ongco," 28, a resident of Iligan City.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ongco was driving a light-duty commercial truck in the early hours of Monday when police stopped his vehicle in Barangay Poblaci³n, Lugait town. He allegedly came from Barangay Limonda in Opol town. During the inspection, police recovered 171 sacks of unprocessed ores, and the suspect was unable to provide the necessary permits when requested by the police.
PRO-10 Director Brig Gen. Christopher Abrahano stated, "We will continue to strengthen our coordination with partner agencies and local government units to put an end to these unlawful activities." The operation underscores the region's ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining activities.
Republic Act No. 7942, known as the Philippine Mining Act, declares all mineral resources as state-owned and mandates a partnership with the private sector to promote economic growth while enforcing environmental protection and protecting community rights. This incident highlights the importance of adhering to regulations designed to protect both the environment and community welfare.
