Quezon city: Over half of the PHP2.5-billion relief assistance to members of the transport sector has been distributed to its beneficiaries, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Saturday. DOTr Acting Secretary Giovani Lopez announced that at least PHP1.5 billion has been allocated to beneficiaries, including public utility drivers, operators, and commuters, through free rides and fare discounts amid the rising costs of fuel.

According to Philippines News Agency, Lopez stated that the distribution of financial aid is being conducted through banks and electronic wallets to ensure a cashless payment system. This approach aims to save time for drivers and operators, sparing them from queuing at Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) offices for their payouts.

Lopez also clarified that the cash relief assistance of PHP5,000 is implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations program. The assistance targets drivers of jeepneys, motorcycle taxis, Transport Network Vehicle Service, and UV Express. Additionally, the government is providing financial aid to qualified operators and drivers under fuel assistance programs.

Furthermore, Lopez mentioned the upcoming inclusion of approximately 19,000 modern and traditional jeepneys and UV express units in the Net Service Contracting Program nationwide early next week. The program will extend benefits to commuters, including a 20 percent fare discount, as directed by the President.

The government is also making efforts to reduce the cost of goods, particularly agricultural products, by offering toll relief for agricultural delivery trucks registered with the Department of Agriculture, starting April 20. Lopez reported that port fees for agricultural shipments have been significantly reduced, with shippers now paying only PHP1 instead of the usual PHP546, under the guidance and instruction of the President.
