Over 4,000 Tricycle Drivers in Legazpi City to Receive Financial Aid Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Legazpi city: More than 4,000 tricycle drivers in Legazpi City are set to receive financial assistance from the national government, supplemented by local government support, as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of escalating fuel prices. The initiative aims to alleviate the economic strain on public utility drivers and help control the rising costs of essential goods.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Hisham Ismail announced that each eligible driver-beneficiary will receive PHP5,000 through a national subsidy program scheduled for April 10 and 11. He emphasized that the assistance would be distributed per driver rather than per franchise. Mayor Ismail expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., acknowledging the government's support in addressing the challenges posed by fuel price hikes.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) has been tasked with profiling beneficiaries to ensure fair distribution of the aid. In addition to the national subsidy, the Legazpi City government has approved an extra PHP1,000 per driver, pending endorsement by the 17th City Council. This local assistance is expected to be dispensed approximately three weeks after the national payout, ensuring effective use of funds.

Mayor Ismail has instructed local Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) leaders to maintain impartiality in beneficiary selection, underscoring the importance of forwarding the finalized list to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for approval. Moreover, financial aid plans are underway for fishermen affected by the dual challenges of rising fuel expenses and recent adverse weather conditions.

Simultaneously, a technical working group (TWG) has been established in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry to regulate pricing and prevent excessive pricing and hoarding activities. The TWG is tasked with inspecting businesses, including gasoline stations and hardware stores, to ensure adherence to pricing guidelines.

Mayor Ismail called for collective cooperation among residents and business proprietors, highlighting the importance of community solidarity during crises. He stressed the need for gradual price adjustments, if necessary, to minimize the immediate impact on the community.
