Over 4 Million Learners and 156,000 Teachers Affected by Mindanao Quake: DepEd

Manila: The Department of Education (DepEd) reported on Tuesday that a massive magnitude 7.8 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks in parts of Mindanao have impacted over 4 million learners. Additionally, more than 156,000 teachers and non-teaching personnel have been affected by the disaster.

According to Philippines News Agency, DepEd Undersecretary for Operations Malcolm Garma highlighted the widespread impact of the earthquake during a teleradio interview. He noted that the affected learners encompass those who may have suffered damage to their homes, in addition to disruptions at their educational institutions. Garma specified that the personnel affected include both teaching and non-teaching staff.

Some individuals reportedly lost consciousness during the earthquake due to fear or panic. While there have been reports of casualties and injuries, these are yet to be validated. Garma also mentioned an unconfirmed report of a student casualty, believed to be a victim of a landslide in Sarangani.

Garma emphasized the importance of addressing the emotional and mental well-being of learners before resuming classes. He stressed that children should be settled, especially regarding the trauma from damaged homes and infrastructure in the affected areas, notably in Sarangani and General Santos City.

For schools that have sustained damage, DepEd plans to implement alternative delivery modes (ADM) of learning when feasible. If ADMs are not possible due to lack of electricity, water, or internet, schools may consider catch-up classes. The department's rapid assessment indicated that over 1,000 classrooms have sustained varying degrees of damage.

A viral video showed a school building collapsing at Matanao National High School during the quake. Garma clarified that the building was condemned and unused, ensuring no learners were inside during the incident. Buildings with major or total damage will be demolished due to compromised structural integrity.

Garma also praised public school teachers for their preparedness and dedication to protecting learners during the disaster. He conveyed gratitude on behalf of Education Secretary Sonny Angara, acknowledging teachers as heroes for prioritizing the welfare of students during the crisis.
