Manila: The Department of Health-Metro Manila Center for Health Development (DOH-MMCHD) has initiated a campaign in the National Capital Region (NCR) aimed at protecting over 1.2 million children from measles and rubella. The campaign, named Ligtas Tigdas, intends to immunize 1,200,428 children aged between 6 to 59 months throughout Metro Manila through a supplemental immunization activity.
According to Philippines News Agency, vaccinations will be conducted at designated fixed and temporary vaccination posts across the cities and the lone municipality of the region. This immunization drive is a necessary measure to restore herd immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases, particularly given the ongoing threat of measles outbreaks in various parts of the country.
DOH-MMCHD Regional Director Lester Tan highlighted the serious nature of measles, stating, "Measles is not a simple disease. It can cause severe complications such as pneumonia, brain inflammation, blindness and even death, especially in unvaccinated children." He further emphasized the campaign's goal, "Through the Ligtas Tigdas campaign, we want to ensure that every Filipino child has adequate protection against this disease."
To ensure the highest possible accessibility for the public, the vaccination rollout will utilize fixed points such as health centers, barangay vaccination sites, selected hospitals, schools, and other temporary hubs designated by local government units. In addition to measles and rubella shots, children will also receive vitamin A supplementation.
The DOH-MMCHD is also intensifying its information drive and community engagement efforts to combat vaccine hesitancy and motivate more parents to participate. Parents and guardians, especially those who remain uncertain, are urged to support the campaign for the safety of their children and the broader community. They are encouraged to bring their eligible children to the nearest vaccination post once local immunization schedules commence.
