Manila: An OCTA Research survey released on Tuesday showed that majority or 72 percent, of adult Filipinos feel safe in their homes and communities.
According to Philippines News Agency, the survey, held from July 4 to 11, provided 1,200 respondents with three options to best describe their response to the statement: 'We would like to know your opinion and personal experience about the issue of peace and order in your place.' Most respondents, or 72 percent, chose "feel safe in the neighborhood," while 68 percent indicated they are "not afraid to walk alone at night."
About half, or 54 percent, responded that they are "not worried about robbers breaking into the home." OCTA Research noted that these results suggest general perceptions of neighborhood safety remain positive, but confidence becomes more guarded when respondents consider specific personal and household security risks.
The survey indicated that disagreement is lowest for feeling safe in the neighborhood at 12 percent, followed by not being afraid to walk alone at night at 16 percent. At least 21 percent of respondents disagree that they are not worried about robbers breaking into their homes.
OCTA Research added that "undecided responses are also highest for home security at 25 percent, compared with 15 percent for feeling safe in the neighborhood and 16 percent for walking alone at night."
Across major areas, the Visayas recorded the highest agreement that residents feel safe in their neighborhood at 84 percent, while NCR recorded the lowest at 58 percent. For walking alone at night, agreement was highest in Balance Luzon at 72 percent, followed by Mindanao at 71 percent, but lowest in NCR at 48 percent. Confidence regarding home security was highest in Balance Luzon at 61 percent and lowest in NCR at 44 percent and Mindanao at 47 percent.
By socioeconomic classes, OCTA noted that the three safety indicators show broadly similar patterns, although Class ABC recorded lower confidence regarding home break-ins at 48 percent compared to Classes D and E at 55 percent each.
The survey reported a ±3 percent margin of error at a 95 percent confidence level, with subnational estimates for the geographic areas covered having margins of error of ±6 percent for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
