NUP Seeks Expulsion of Barzaga and Plans Charges Beyond Congress

Manila: The National Unity Party (NUP) is advocating for the expulsion of Dasmari±as City Rep. Francisco 'Kiko' Barzaga from the House of Representatives while preparing to file separate charges against him outside Congress, as stated by party chairperson and Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno of Antipolo City.

According to Philippines News Agency, Puno expressed concerns during a press conference about Barzaga's presence in the House, suggesting it undermines the institution. He mentioned the possibility of the House considering Barzaga's expulsion to eliminate ongoing issues associated with his conduct.

Barzaga's recent statements and actions have prompted the NUP to contemplate a new complaint seeking his outright expulsion. The party intends to include Barzaga's controversial remarks about the late Antipolo City Rep. Romeo Acop in their complaint. The party has yet to receive feedback from the House Committee on Ethics regarding a fitness determination they previously requested against Barzaga.

Puno accused Barzaga of acting in bad faith and making baseless accusations. He criticized Barzaga for lacking understanding of House rules, particularly concerning privilege speeches. Puno emphasized the necessity for Congress to set an example by addressing members who defy the institution's principles and cause confusion, thereby tarnishing the reputation of Congress.

Beyond potential sanctions within the House, Puno indicated that the party is preparing to pursue legal action outside Congress, focusing on statements deemed personal affronts to NUP members. He asserted that suspension is insufficient as Barzaga's behavior has persisted despite prior sanctions.

Puno highlighted the impact of alleged falsehoods spread by Barzaga against party members, affecting them personally and politically. The goal, according to Puno, is to prevent the issue from becoming a continual distraction.

Earlier, Puno condemned Barzaga's social media posts and public statements, accusing NUP members of receiving bribes. Barzaga alleged that NUP congressmen accepted bribes from businessman Enrique Razon to support former Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez in the 2025 elections. Puno described these allegations as baseless, reckless, and malicious.
