NPA Urged to Reflect, Abandon Insurgency This Lent

Tacloban: The Philippine Army's 8th Infantry Division (8ID) has called on remaining members of the communist New People's Army (NPA) to reflect during Holy Week and consider abandoning their armed struggle in favor of peace. In a statement on Monday, the 8ID stated that the path of armed conflict leads to isolation and loss, while choosing peace creates opportunities for reconciliation, stability, and a more meaningful future.

According to Philippines News Agency, the 8ID emphasized their commitment to defending communities from threats of violence to ensure that peace and development prevail. This guiding principle continues to direct their efforts in protecting the people and securing communities. As the country observes Holy Week, the Army in Eastern Visayas expressed solidarity with peace-loving Filipinos in promoting a society anchored on justice, compassion, and lasting peace.

The 8ID reiterated its condemnation of alleged atrocities committed by the NPA, including extortion, intimidation, recruitment of minors, and violence that have affected communities for decades. The statement highlighted that the NPA's struggle has brought destruction, fear, and disruption to livelihoods in many barangays, rather than liberation.

The 8ID labeled the armed struggle as 'futile and self-defeating,' citing ongoing military operations and nationwide efforts that have diminished the forces and influence of the communist terrorist group in Eastern Visayas. These developments are seen as a reflection not only of operational gains but also of the growing rejection of violence by communities.

The division also underscored the transformation of former rebels who have returned to the fold of the law through government reintegration programs, highlighting the potential for peace and normalcy for those who choose to abandon the insurgency.
