Bacolod: Some local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental have suspended classes and government work to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution. According to Philippines News Agency, February 25 is designated as a special working day under Proclamation No. 1006, series of 2025, issued by Malaca±ang.
On Tuesday night, Mayor Ray Ruiz announced via Facebook the suspension of classes at all levels and work in government offices in Candoni town. Similarly, Mayor Miguel Angelo Yulo of Isabela town announced that while classes and government work are suspended, essential offices and agencies delivering basic and emergency services will remain operational. Mayor Grace Arceo of Hinigaran town issued an executive order to cancel classes and government work, emphasizing that essential services will continue to be available.
In La Castellana, Mayor A±ejo Nicor ordered the suspension of classes at all levels. Hinoba-an town also canceled face-to-face classes. Mayor Daph Anthony Reliquias urged schools to adopt alternative learning methods to ensure educational continuity and encouraged reflection on the values of courage, unity, and democracy.
In the highly urbanized Bacolod City, major private Catholic schools such as the University of St. La Salle, University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos, Colegio San Agustin - Bacolod, and St. Scholastica's Academy of Bacolod City canceled classes. La Consolacion College - Bacolod stopped classes starting Wednesday noon, while VMA Global College and Training Centers suspended its office operations.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro mentioned that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will review proposals to reinstate February 25 as a non-working holiday. This follows House Bill 7911, proposed by Akbayan party-list lawmakers, advocating for a regular holiday to honor the peaceful uprising of February 1986.
