Cantilan: Nine Chinese nationals and a Filipino were apprehended during an intelligence-driven operation targeting illegal mining activities in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur. The operation took place on Thursday evening, as announced by the Police Regional Office (PRO) 13 (Caraga) in a statement released on Saturday. The Chinese nationals were arrested in Carac-an Downstream in Barangay Lobo and are currently in the custody of the Cantilan Municipal Police. The statement did not disclose the names of the suspects.
According to Philippines News Agency, the operation led to the seizure of heavy equipment and mining paraphernalia, including excavators, pay loaders, dump trucks, generator sets, sluice boxes, water pumps, bunkhouses, and other support equipment used in illegal mineral extraction, valued at PHP50.5 million. The confiscated items were handed over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for proper processing and the development of an environmental case.
PRO-13 Director Brig. Gen. Marcial Mariano Magistrado IV stated, "This successful operation reflects our firm resolve to protect our natural resources and enforce environmental laws without fear or favor." He emphasized that illegal mining not only harms the environment but also jeopardizes lawful industries and community safety.
Magistrado praised the collaboration with other agencies that contributed to the operation's success, including the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in the area, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine Air Force, and various police units in the region. The suspects are set to face charges for violating Republic Act 7942, or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995, along with other relevant environmental and immigration laws.
