Ilocos sur: Local residents trooped to the National Food Authority (NFA) Bantay warehouse in Ilocos Sur as the PHP20 per kilogram rice program under the Benteng Bigas Meron Na (BBM) initiative of the Department of Agriculture (DA) became available again to vulnerable sectors, officials announced.
According to Philippines News Agency, Pedrito Esquero, a senior citizen from Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, expressed his approval of the program. Esquero mentioned that this initiative is essential for him and his children. Similarly, Mary Ann Rafal from Pantay Daya, Ilocos Sur, highlighted the importance of accessible and affordable rice for her family, noting the high cost of rice sold in the market.
Emilia Riodil of San Vicente and Mercy Pugrad of Cabaroan shared their gratitude for the program, stating that it is a significant support for those in need. They emphasized their appreciation for the President's initiative as they hurried to the nearest NFA warehouse upon hearing the program's availability.
The Food Terminal Incorporated under the DA is leading the program, with rice available at the NFA Bantay Branch warehouse in Ilocos Sur, the Laoag warehouse in Ilocos Norte, and the Bangued warehouse in Abra province. Eligible recipients include senior citizens, solo parents, persons with disabilities, indigents or 4Ps members, farmers and fisherfolk, and public transport drivers and operators.
Engineer Jonathan Corpuz, NFA Ilocos Norte provincial manager, explained that farmers are eligible to avail of 50 kilograms for five months, while other recipients can avail of at least 30 kilograms per month.
