New Naval Craft Showcases Philippine Navy’s Commitment to Maritime Security

Subic: The head of the Philippine Navy (PN) stated that the acquisition of modern naval craft demonstrates the Navy's dedication to addressing both traditional and emerging security challenges in the maritime domain. PN chief Vice Adm. Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta highlighted this commitment during the christening and commissioning of the country's first brand-new offshore patrol vessel (OPV), the BRP Rajah Sulayman (PS-20), and the last of the nine fast attack interdiction craft (FAIC), the BRP Audrey Ba±ares (PG-910), at the Operating Base-Subic in Zambales.

According to Philippines News Agency, Vice Adm. Ezpeleta emphasized that both ships represent tangible commitments to protecting the nation's seas and securing its people. He noted that the BRP Rajah Sulayman, as the first of her class, is a significant addition to the fleet, enhancing the Navy's capacity for sustained operations and bolstering national defense.

Ezpeleta further remarked on the versatility brought by the BRP Audrey Ba±ares, which strengthens the patrol forces' readiness and adaptability to face both traditional and emerging maritime security challenges. With these new naval vessels in operation, the PN chief reiterated the Navy's dedication to safeguarding the nation's maritime domain and supporting national and regional security objectives.

He expressed confidence that the new vessels would play vital roles in the Navy's sea operations and contribute to the growth and development of the Philippine Navy.

The contract for the nine FAICs, known as the Acero-class gunboats, was finalized in February 2021 and is valued at PHP10 billion. These new ships are poised to replace the Navy's medium-sized patrol craft and enhance the protection of the Philippines' littoral waters.
