Bacolod city: The Negros Occidental provincial government has extended PHP2 million in financial aid to the province of Sarangani, which suffered extensive damage following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that occurred off its coast on June 8. The assistance aims to support Sarangani in its recovery efforts after the devastating natural disaster.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Provincial Board, under the leadership of Vice Governor Jose Benito Alonso, emphasized the necessity of this aid in a statement released on Tuesday. Alonso, who is currently serving as the acting governor during Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson's leave, presented the symbolic check to Sarangani officials, including Vice Governor Danny Martinez. The presentation took place during an intergovernmental learning exchange between the two provinces at the Capitol Social Hall on Monday afternoon.

Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II assured Sarangani representatives that they have a steadfast ally in Negros Occidental. He reiterated the importance of solidarity among local government units, emphasizing that no community should ever feel isolated during challenging times. 'We shared our best practices, gave financial assistance to the victims of the earthquake, and assisted the Province of Sarangani,' Diaz stated.

During the event, Negros Occidental showcased various departmental achievements, sharing insights into the province's successful approaches to local legislation, economic enterprise, tourism, disaster preparedness, and environmental protection. This initiative reflects their commitment to fostering interprovincial cooperation and support.

This is not the first time Negros Occidental has offered assistance to earthquake-affected regions. Last year, the provincial government provided PHP2 million to Bogo City, which was severely impacted by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu province on September 30.
