Negros island: A total of 452 leptospirosis cases were reported in the Negros Island Region (NIR) in 2025, a health official said on Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Adrian Hort Ramos, Assistant Director of the Department of Health - Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR), mentioned in a media interview that the number is subject to change after the inclusion of delayed reporting and verification of cases.
Ramos highlighted the expectation of more cases this year due to the extreme weather conditions causing heavy rainfall and flooding in the region. He noted that since last year, there has been a significant increase in leptospirosis cases, particularly during rainy days and periods of flooding.
The health official expressed concern over the rising numbers and emphasized the importance of avoiding wading in floodwaters. He explained that leptospirosis can be contracted not only by wading in flooded areas but also through entry points such as the eyes and nose.
Ramos acknowledged that some individuals might need to navigate through flooded zones to retrieve their possessions but stressed the importance of seeking prompt medical care to ensure their safety. He noted that the Department of Health provides free prophylaxis medication for leptospirosis and warned against self-treatment, emphasizing that a doctor's evaluation is crucial for managing the illness.
