NBI to Probe Credibility, Allegations of 18 Ex-Marines

Manila:<Text>

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Wednesday announced a comprehensive investigation into allegations made by 18 former Marines. These individuals claim they delivered cash to public officials and personalities in connection with anomalous flood control projects.

According to Philippines News Agency, NBI Director Melvyn Matibag stated that his office is committed to exploring all leads related to the former Marines' claims, which include details of billions of pesos purportedly delivered to government officials. Matibag highlighted the role of the Office of the Ombudsman, which has empowered the NBI to investigate the matter thoroughly, focusing on the joint affidavit and allegations presented by the 18 Marines.

Matibag emphasized the importance of a clear investigation process, starting with the complainants and their statements. The NBI has already begun assessing the claims, particularly examining the men's alleged affiliation with the Philippine Marine Corps.

The investigation will scrutinize the credibility of the individuals involved and the validity of their statements. Matibag noted that there were initial reports suggesting some of the men were not actual members of the Marine Corps, a claim that has been verified as true upon investigation.

Furthermore, Matibag acknowledged that some of the individuals have existing criminal cases. He reiterated the NBI's commitment to following the evidence wherever it may lead in this investigation.
