Manila: The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has issued subpoenas to 18 individuals who claim to be former Marines, along with three other people, in connection with allegations of delivering cash to both current and former government officials. Among those subpoenaed are former congressman Mike Defensor, lawyer Levito Baligod, and an unnamed lawyer who notarized affidavits from the former Marines, as announced by NBI Director Melvin Matibag.
According to Philippines News Agency, NBI's involvement comes as they have been deputized by the Ombudsman to investigate these claims. National Security Adviser Eduardo A±o and former senator Antonio Trillanes IV have lodged complaints against the group with the Department of Justice (DOJ). In a recent press conference, Baligod presented the 18 ex-Marines who reportedly witnessed the delivery of up to PHP805 billion in alleged kickbacks to politicians linked to dubious flood control projects.
The former Marines claim to have served as aides to Zaldy Co, a fugitive former lawmaker who is considered a central figure in the flood control scandal. Meanwhile, Malaca±ang has dismissed the group's allegations, describing them as a "lousy script" and has called for law enforcement agencies to undertake appropriate measures.
