NBI Charges Two Malaysians for Cybercrime Law Violation

Cebu city: Charges for violation of the cybercrime law have been filed against two Malaysian nationals, Chong Hong Yee and Kim Chui Tan, following their arrest. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) announced Tuesday that the charges were filed after illicit electronic equipment was seized from the suspects in Cebu City.

According to Philippines News Agency, the NBI stated that the charges came after a team comprising NBI agents and officers from the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center (CICC), the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) confiscated the equipment on August 8, 2025. Investigators confirmed that the laptops, antennas, and other modular setups seized were cellular and data sniffers capable of capturing data from 5G networks.

The NBI clarified that these tools required approval from the NTC before they could be used. The CICC had earlier requested assistance concerning the alleged distribution and use of illicit transceivers by the arrested foreign nationals on June 28. The seized equipment is currently undergoing forensic examination to strengthen the evidence collected for the violation of Republic Act No. 10175, known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
