Murder Complaint Against Atong Ang and Others Submitted for Resolution – DOJ

Manila: The criminal complaint against businessman Charlie ‘Atong’ Ang and other individuals concerning the disappearance of cockfight enthusiasts has been submitted for resolution, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced. DOJ spokesperson Raphael Martinez stated that the panel of prosecutors will now assess if there is “a prima facie case” to present before the courts.

According to Philippines News Agency, Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Charlie Guhit mentioned that over four dozen respondents implicated in the alleged disappearance had filed their counter-affidavits. Guhit noted, “The panel of prosecutors declared the preliminary investigation submitted for resolution after the complainants decided not to reply to the counter-affidavits.”

Records indicate that 56 respondents have submitted counter-affidavits. The panel aims to resolve the case promptly, although no specific date has been set for issuing the resolution. The panel may choose to dismiss the case or proceed with filing the complaint in court. If dismissed, complainants have the option to re-file with additional evidence.

Ang’s legal team previously requested the panel to return the case to the Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group for further investigation. Guhit clarified that the panel’s options are limited to either dismissing or filing the case.

Whistleblower Julie ‘Dondon’ Patidongan expressed hope for justice for the victims’ families, stating, “We will just wait for the decision. Hopefully, justice will be attained by the victims.” Patidongan’s lawyer, Manuel Ventura, expressed confidence in the DOJ’s ability to uphold the rule of law through its integrity and probity.
