Manila: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is deploying up to 10,000 Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) personnel to support the agency's cleanup of waterways in the National Capital Region.

According to Philippines News Agency, MMDA General Manager Undersecretary Nicolas Torre III revealed in a radio interview that the Department of Labor and Employment provided the workers, with the MMDA overseeing their supervision and deployment. Torre emphasized that the deployment of these workers would be staggered rather than simultaneous, indicating a strategic approach to the cleanup operations.

The TUPAD workers are supervised by MMDA's regular personnel to ensure proper guidance and adherence to technical and safety protocols. Torre noted that these workers are expected to work alongside regular staff, integrating their efforts to maximize the impact of the cleanup operations.

The initial deployment focuses on areas identified as requiring additional manpower for effective waterway clearing. Torre also highlighted the MMDA's criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of its flood mitigation efforts, which include assessing the extent, depth, and recession speed of floodwaters.

To combat issues like siltation, dredging operations are ongoing, particularly in the Las Pi±as-Para±aque River, with efforts extending to areas such as Muntinlupa. Torre called for public cooperation in the government's comprehensive initiatives to address flooding, traffic, and waste management challenges.
