Quezon city: Parts of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) near West and North Avenue in Quezon City will be temporarily closed to traffic beginning February 1, as part of construction works for the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7).
According to Philippines News Agency, MMDA Chair Romando 'Don' Artes revealed during a press conference at the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) headquarters in Pasig City that traffic enforcers from MMDA and the Quezon City government, along with traffic marshals from the project contractor, will be deployed to manage traffic in the affected areas.
Artes noted that while minimal traffic is expected during the partial closure of portions of EDSA at nighttime, significant traffic impact is anticipated during full closures to facilitate construction activities. The closed lanes along EDSA will serve as a site for tower support systems needed for girder launching activities for the MRT-7. Artes emphasized that these closures aim to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters while heavy equipment is maneuvered during lifting and launching operations.
Beginning Sunday until February 21, the northbound portion of EDSA near North Avenue will be closed from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m., with four lanes reopening from 4:01 a.m. to 9:59 p.m. From February 22 to 26, the southbound portion of EDSA-North Avenue will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., with four lanes reopening outside these hours. The northbound closures will resume from February 27 to March 10, then shift to the southbound portion from March 11 to 23.
From March 24 to April 20, the intersection of EDSA-West Avenue will be fully closed, but this will not affect regular traffic on EDSA. No road closures are scheduled from April 21 to 29. The northbound portion of EDSA-North Avenue will be closed again from April 29 to May 8 for the dismantling of tower support systems, followed by southbound closures from May 9 to 19 for similar dismantling activities.
To mitigate traffic disruptions during lane closures, two zipper lanes will be opened in the opposite direction. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes for travel to Balintawak and Cubao during scheduled lane closures. The northbound portion of EDSA is scheduled to reopen on May 8, while the southbound portion will be fully reopened on May 18.
As of December 2025, the MRT-7 project is 82.01 percent complete, with commercial operations from North EDSA to Sacred Heart in Quezon City slated to begin by the first half of 2027.
