Metro manila: The construction of the Metro Manila Subway Project Phase 1 (MMSP 1) is 'on track' for its target completion, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Friday. The agency aims to conduct a demo run by the first quarter of 2028, with full passenger operations anticipated by 2031.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOTr Undersecretary Timothy John Batan indicated that the subway project involves five tranches of Japanese loans. During an interview following the signing of the fourth tranche of Japanese loan at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Batan confirmed the project is progressing as per the latest program schedule. He noted that ten tunnel boring machines are currently operational daily, most contracts have been awarded, and construction activities are fully underway at all sites.
The fourth tranche of the Japanese loan for MMSP 1, amounting to 220 billion Japanese yen or approximately PHP84.81 billion, was signed and exchanged by Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya.
The MMSP 1 project encompasses the physical integration with the North-South Commuter Railway (NCSR) System, specifically the FTI to Bicutan segment. It includes the construction of a depot, 17 stations, and the procurement of 30 train sets. Upon completion, the project will establish a 27.5-kilometer subway line from Valenzuela to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.
