Manila: The Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has announced that it has become the only gateway in the Philippines to achieve Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) from the Airports Council International in Asia-Pacific and Middle East (ACI APAC and MID).

According to Philippines News Agency, the accreditation acknowledges MCIA's completion of a verified greenhouse gas inventory and its implementation of effective carbon management strategies, as stated by airport operator Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation (ACAC) in a news release. "This ACA Level 2 validates that our team is making real, measurable progress in embedding sustainability into every aspect of our operations," said MCIA General Manager of ACAC Ricia Montejo.

Montejo emphasized that by balancing smart energy solutions with world-class service, Cebu's growth as a premier transfer hub continues to be environmentally responsible and aligned with global best practices. MCIA Authority General Manager Julius Neri Jr. noted that the achievement is a testament to the strong public-private synergy for sustainable infrastructure.

Under its updated carbon management plan, MCIA aims to reduce emission intensity by over 90 percent by 2029 compared to its baseline levels, reinforcing its commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Emission reduction measures include energy efficiency opportunities through the building management system, utilizing its 1.64 megawatt peak (MWp) rooftop solar power, smart sensors, and implementation of monitoring and maintenance protocols to improve heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. The airport also monitors fuel consumption of vehicles and equipment to match usage efficiency and is converting to LED lighting.
