Caloocan city: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has reaffirmed the government's commitment to advancing locally produced electric vehicles (EVs), beginning with the development of an all-Filipino electric tricycle, with plans to eventually extend production to electric jeepneys.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos visited the facilities of MD Juan Enterprises, Inc., an automotive parts manufacturer located in Caloocan City, to evaluate what additional support and equipment are needed to facilitate local production of electric vehicles. MD Juan Enterprises is a participant in the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) e-mobility initiative and specializes in manufacturing machine-pressed metal parts and restoration kits for vintage, military, and civilian jeeps.
President Marcos emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing gaps in the company's current capabilities, with the assistance of the DOST and other national government agencies. He stated, "Kaya tinitingnan namin ang mga facilities, ano yung nandito na, ano na yung mga kulang, ano pa yung mga kulang na susuportahan ng ating DOST, ng national government para makapagawa na tayo ng electric vehicle dito sa Pilipinas."
The President highlighted that establishing a domestic EV manufacturing industry is crucial for reducing the country's reliance on imported petroleum products and for fostering a more stable transport sector. Furthermore, locally manufactured EVs could provide more sustainable livelihood opportunities for transport workers.
Marcos indicated that providing the necessary additional equipment for EV production is the next step forward. He expressed optimism, stating, "And together with our technical consultants, I believe that we will soon be seeing a Filipino electric vehicle tricycle. At maybe down the road, makagawa na tayo ng (we will be able to produce electric) jeepney."
This initiative is part of the administration's broader efforts to promote e-mobility, modernize transportation, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and enhance local manufacturing capabilities.
