Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is closely monitoring the situation in areas affected by Super Typhoon Nando (international name Ragasa), as confirmed by Malaca±ang on Tuesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that President Marcos has been receiving constant updates from Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., who chairs the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). “The President is monitoring the weather situation and Secretary Teodoro is giving him constant updates,” Castro relayed to Palace reporters.
Typhoon Nando has exited the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Tuesday morning, making its way toward southern China. Despite its departure, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 is still in effect over parts of Northern Luzon, including the western section of Babuyan Islands, northwestern Cagayan, northern Apayao, and Ilocos Norte. Signal No. 1 is also in place over Batanes, the remainder of Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, northern Isabela, the rest of Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and northwestern Pangasinan. The state weather bureau has indicated that these wind signals may be lifted within the day.
In the meantime, a tropical depression located east of the country is expected to enter PAR as early as Tuesday afternoon or evening. Upon entering, it will be designated as ‘Opong.’ At 10 a.m., the tropical depression was situated 1,075 km east of Eastern Visayas.
The NDRRMC previously reported that preemptive evacuations have been carried out in multiple provinces, with local government units remaining on heightened alert to offer immediate assistance to impacted communities. Additionally, the Department of Budget and Management has assured the public that the government possesses sufficient funds to address the consequences of the adverse weather conditions.
