Marcos Commends Philippine Coast Guard for Upholding Public Trust

Manila: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday commended the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for demonstrating that ‘government is still worthy of the people’s trust,’ as his administration continues efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability in public service.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos praised the Coast Guard during its 124th anniversary celebration at Pier 15 in Manila, highlighting its integrity and discipline. He stated that in times when public trust in the government has been shaken, the PCG stands as a testament to the best qualities of government service, characterized by discipline, integrity, and excellence.

Marcos emphasized the Coast Guard’s crucial role in the West Philippine Sea, its disaster rescue operations that have saved over a million Filipinos this year, and its efforts in confiscating nearly PHP2 billion worth of illegal drugs and smuggled goods. He assured continued support for the PCG through the provision of new vessels, aircraft, and facilities, including the development of the PCG General Hospital and the Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center.

The event, which also saw the attendance of First Lady and PCG reservist Liza Araneta Marcos, occurred amid controversies regarding alleged anomalies in flood-control funding and renewed demands for accountability within the government. Marcos expressed his belief that the PCG is a beacon of dedication within the government, embodying discipline, integrity, and excellence.

Marcos acknowledged the challenging times and the erosion of public trust in the government but expressed confidence that trust can be restored through transparency and commitment to the mission.
