Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday reinforced his administration’s dedication to enhancing protections, updating services, and broadening government support for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), asserting that every OFW should be acknowledged as a hero.
According to Philippines News Agency, during his address at the 2025 Bagong Bayani Awards held in Malaca±ang, President Marcos emphasized that OFWs continue to be ‘the strength and light’ of the nation. He acknowledged that their sacrifices abroad are pivotal in sustaining families and uplifting communities back home. ‘Kaya bilang suporta, asahan ninyo na nandito lang ang inyong pamahalaan,’ he assured, signaling the government’s unwavering support for OFWs.
President Marcos further elaborated on the government’s commitment to ensuring that every OFW is treated with the honor they deserve. He highlighted that through the Department of Migrant Workers, efforts will persist in elevating protection and streamlining services for OFWs. The ongoing digital transformation for OFW processes was also underscored, including the introduction of the OFW Travel Pass on the eGovPH App and the Online Employment Contract Verification System.
Additionally, he noted that around 300,000 electronic cards have been issued by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to facilitate easier access to services and benefits for OFWs. Health initiatives like the OFW Hospital and OWWA Botika remain a priority. The President also mentioned the AKSYON Fund, which provides emergency legal, medical, and financial assistance, and the establishment of OFW Lounges at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to ensure comfort and dignity for OFW travelers.
Marcos committed to ongoing efforts in combating human trafficking and enhancing reintegration programs, which include start-up capital, financial literacy, and livelihood support for returning OFWs. ‘Lahat ng ito ay upang masiguro na hindi masasayang ang inyong pinaghirapan at maging matagumpay ang inyong pag-uwi,’ he remarked, underscoring the goal of ensuring that the hard work of OFWs leads to successful homecomings.
The Bagong Bayani Awards, initiated in 1983 by former President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr., recognize exemplary OFWs who embody heroism, integrity, compassion, and professional excellence. This year’s awardees include Filipino workers honored for their exceptional contributions in employment, community service, culture and arts, successful reintegration, and acts of heroism, such as a Filipino ship crew that rescued 52 migrants off Crete, Greece, and a caregiver who shielded her employer during the 2023 attacks in southern Israel.
