Manila Cathedral to Open Crypt of Cardinal Sin to Public for EDSA Anniversary

Manila: The Manila Cathedral will open to the public on Wednesday the crypt where former Manila archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin lies, as part of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power revolution. The opening of the crypt is intended to provide an opportunity for those who may want to pay their respects to the cardinal, who is recognized as one of the main personalities in the 1986 peaceful uprising.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Cathedral announced on social media that the public opening of the final resting place of the former head of the Archdiocese of Manila will occur on February 25, 2026, the exact 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution. The Cathedral emphasized Cardinal Sin's significant role in the restoration of democracy in 1986, highlighting the importance of continuing the pursuit of truth, justice, and peace.

On the night of February 22, 1986, Cardinal Sin made a historic call through Radio Veritas, urging people to go to EDSA and support the military officers. This call initiated a four-day gathering on EDSA, where thousands of Filipinos confronted soldiers and tanks with prayer and the rosary.

Cardinal Sin passed away in 2005 after a prolonged illness and currently rests in the crypt of the Manila Cathedral located in Intramuros.
