Maguindanao del sur: Maguindanao del Sur Lone District Representative Esmael Mangudadatu has voiced his disapproval over columnist Ramon Tulfo's recent description of the suspects in the killing of a Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) official as "Muslim." Tulfo made this characterization on his Facebook page, referring to the attackers as "mga Muslim na taga Lanao del Sur" (Muslims from Lanao del Sur), which he attributed to his sources.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mangudadatu expressed his profound dismay and concern over Tulfo's remarks, highlighting the discriminatory nature of associating the crime with a religious identity. This statement was also shared via Mangudadatu's Facebook account, echoing his concern over the social media post.
Security footage revealed that Joana Infante, a 50-year-old executive of CAAP-Puerto Princesa International Airport, was fatally shot by a lone suspect on February 18 while walking along Bay View Road in Barangay San Pedro, Puerto Princesa City. Following the incident, the group Bangsamoro Para sa Kamanggagawa criticized Tulfo's comments as both stereotyping and discriminatory.
The Bureau of Peace and Conflict Resolution also weighed in, stating that generalizing and attributing a criminal act to an entire religious community is unfair and unethical. Mangudadatu further emphasized that using "Muslim" as an identifier for the suspects was an unethical, sweeping generalization that wrongfully implicates Muslims globally.
Mangudadatu argued that Tulfo's remarks have tarnished the dignity of Maranaw Muslims, the broader Muslim community, and the sanctity of Islam, a faith promoting love, peace, justice, humility, discipline, respect, and compassion. He urged Tulfo to adopt a more responsible approach, advocating for enlightenment and understanding.
