Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Shakes Surigao del Sur

Surigao del sur: A magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted Surigao del Sur on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. The tectonic quake struck 24 kilometers northeast of the municipality of Bayabas at 12:48 a.m. with a depth of 20 kilometers.

According to Philippines News Agency, Intensity IV was felt in Bayabas and the City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur, as well as Claver, Surigao del Norte. Intensity III was reported in Cagwait and Lingig, Surigao del Sur, and Intensity II in the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur, Nabunturan, Compostela, Montevista, and Monkayo, Davao de Oro.

Phivolcs recorded various instrumental intensities, including Intensity III in Hinundayan, Southern Leyte, Intensity II in San Francisco and Sogod, Southern Leyte; the City of Baybay, Abuyog, and Hilongos, Leyte; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; and the City of Gingoog, Misamis Oriental. Intensity I was noted in San Fernando, Bukidnon, and Dulag, Leyte.

Reported intensity is the traditional method of determining intensity based on human reports, while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that gauges ground acceleration. Meanwhile, Phivolcs noted that while aftershocks are possible, damage from the earthquake is not expected.
