Bacolod city: The Land Transportation Office-Negros Island Region (LTO-NIR) has launched an administrative inquiry into a modernized jeepney unit in Bacolod City due to allegations of overloading.
According to Philippines News Agency, a show-cause order has been issued to the operator of the vehicle. The incident came to light after a viral video, taken on January 27, depicted an Alijis-Central Market jeepney exceeding its authorized passenger capacity. The vehicle is registered under MBMJ and UY Transport Services Inc. The video also captured a heated exchange between the conductor and a concerned passenger, raising concerns about passenger safety and courtesy.
The LTO-NIR's report indicates that the administrative inquiry will assess potential violations of Republic Act 4136, known as the Land Transportation and Traffic Code. These include overcapacity, reckless driving, discourteous conduct, and non-compliance with franchise conditions. The operator and the conductor have been instructed to present themselves at the LTO-NIR office within five days to submit a verified written explanation. Failure to comply may lead to administrative actions, including possible fines, suspension, or other legal sanctions.
In a separate statement, Mayor Greg Gasataya emphasized that operating a modernized jeepney in an overcrowded and overloaded state poses a significant risk to public safety. The mayor confirmed discussions with LTO-NIR OIC Regional Director Jeck Conlu, who affirmed that an investigation has begun. Mayor Gasataya assured the public that any public utility vehicle endangering lives would face legal consequences, and traffic and transport regulations would be strictly enforced.
