Manila: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued a reminder to both public and private motorists to maintain discipline and composure during the anticipated surge of Holy Week travelers starting Maundy Thursday. This advisory aims to ensure a smooth and conflict-free travel period for all.
According to Philippines News Agency, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II emphasized the responsibility of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers in ensuring passenger safety, urging them to practice maximum restraint to prevent unnecessary conflicts. Mendoza highlighted the importance of learning from past road rage incidents, which have proven to be counterproductive and detrimental to all parties involved.
To accommodate the expected increase in commuters, the LTFRB has granted special permits to nearly 1,300 passenger buses. Additionally, Mendoza has directed all LTFRB regional directors to enhance inspections of passenger buses and other PUVs to uphold road safety standards. These inspections will focus not only on the roadworthiness of vehicles but also on assessing the mental and physical conditions of bus drivers.
Mendoza reminded the public that Holy Week, a significant religious observance spanning from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, is a period for reflection. He suggested that one of the best ways to observe Semana Santa is through discipline and self-control, especially in situations that test one's character. Transport companies and PUV operators are encouraged to discuss road safety and road rage prevention with their drivers.
In the Philippines, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are recognized as regular holidays, while Black Saturday is a special non-working holiday.
