LTFRB Suspends 22 Buses for Safety and Passenger Comfort Violations

Manila: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has suspended the operation of 22 buses from two transport companies for violations related to safety and passenger comfort. This move aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to prioritize passenger safety and convenience.

According to Philippines News Agency, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II announced that 17 passenger buses operated by Elavil Tours, Inc., and five buses operated by AMV Travel and Tours, Inc., which service the Bicol-Manila route, have been suspended for a period not exceeding 30 days. Mendoza emphasized that this suspension serves as a stern warning to transport companies to adhere to the minimum standards for safe operations and to maintain passenger-friendly stations and terminals.

In addition to the suspension of operations, show-cause orders have been issued to both companies, requiring them to explain to the board why their franchises should not be suspended or revoked. Mendoza assured that both companies would be afforded due process, with hearings scheduled at the LTFRB Central Office in Quezon City on Wednesday.

On Monday, acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez directed the LTFRB to investigate the two companies following his inspection of bus terminals in Metro Manila. During the inspection, Lopez discovered that Elavil Tours was utilizing an illegal terminal in Pasay City, which had been previously ordered closed by the Department of Transportation (DOTr). Meanwhile, AMV Travel and Tours faced suspension due to non-compliance with the minimum requirements for passenger safety and comfort.
