Manila: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has summoned and cited a total of 116 operators of public utility vehicle (PUV) terminals nationwide as part of its crackdown against run-down transportation facilities.
According to Philippines News Agency, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II stated that the agency has inspected 243 bus and other PUV terminals to ensure compliance with government standards, aiming to provide a more comfortable service to commuters. Of these, 116 terminals were issued show cause orders (SCO) and notices to comply due to various violations, such as insufficient shelter from the weather, inoperable toilets, and cramped spaces compromising passenger comfort and safety.
Mendoza emphasized that the government allows terminal operations under the condition that they provide basic facilities ensuring passenger comfort and safety. Other terminals were also found violating regulations related to security measures and accessibility features for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
The LTFRB highlighted some terminals charging passengers for using comfort rooms as among the worst examples. The agency will continue compliance inspections, seeking to change the 'misplaced mentality' of terminal managers and operators who neglect passenger welfare.
LTFRB regional offices will conduct random and surprise inspections to enforce compliance. Most inspections have been conducted in Metro Manila, with 40 terminals inspected, followed by Central Luzon and Northern Mindanao with 30 each, and Calabarzon with 27. Mendoza affirmed the agency's commitment to making regular inspections a norm, fulfilling its obligation to Filipino commuters.
