Pag-asa island: Senator Erwin Tulfo has announced his commitment to advocating for funding in the 2027 national budget aimed at upgrading facilities and improving living conditions on Pag-asa Island. The senator emphasized the necessity of supporting both the residents and stationed personnel on this strategic western outpost of the Philippines.
According to Philippines News Agency, during a visit to the island, Tulfo expressed his intention to secure allocations under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) to rehabilitate damaged structures, including the municipal hall and other crucial facilities. He highlighted the visibly deteriorating state of many homes and promised to propose necessary repairs.
The proposed infrastructure upgrades include the construction of a barangay health center, enhancement of housing conditions, and the development of essential community facilities to address immediate local needs. Tulfo also underscored the significance of establishing a port and improving transportation access, with plans to collaborate with the Philippine Ports Authority and the Department of Transportation.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Tulfo outlined plans for livelihood assistance to residents. This includes setting up a small trading post and providing financial aid to families, with each household potentially receiving approximately PHP20,000 in livelihood support. This initiative would be coordinated with the Department of Social Welfare and Development, combining sustainable livelihood assistance with cash aid.
The senator also proposed the construction of a Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) facility for troops and civilians, which would offer recreational amenities like a mini-theater and other community spaces. To further enhance access to essential services, Tulfo suggested arranging monthly transport services for residents traveling to mainland Palawan, alongside regular medical missions and the deployment of health workers.
Tulfo reiterated the importance of maintaining the country's rights in the area, stating, "Let's not give it up. It's ours." He added that continuous development and support for local communities and security forces would help reinforce the Philippines' presence and ensure long-term stability on the island.
