Laoag: The Philippine National Police (PNP)-Laoag Traffic Division has intensified its implementation of the anti-nuisance ordinance, particularly during this holiday season. Police chief master sergeant Eric Bumagat, head of the PNP-Laoag Traffic Division, announced in a media interview that they began enforcing the ordinance on December 22.
According to Philippines News Agency, the ordinance prohibits cars and motorcycles with modified mufflers or sound boosters due to the harmful effects of noise pollution on health and the distraction it poses to other motorists. In Laoag, vehicles with such modifications are often seen racing along the Laoag bypass road past midnight, disturbing the sleep of and causing annoyance to nearby communities.
Bumagat stated that the intensified implementation aims to reduce road noise by banning vehicles emitting sounds over 90 decibels, a noise level compliant with national safety standards. Motorists found exceeding this noise limit will face corresponding penalties.
