Laoag: Encampments are up along the La Paz sand dunes to house participants of the 2026 Balikatan Exercises, which opened Monday and will run until May 8. The 4th Marine Brigade, in coordination with the provincial government of Ilocos Norte, is spearheading local efforts to inform affected communities, particularly in the coastal areas of Metro La Paz. A major live-fire exercise is scheduled on May 4.
According to Philippines News Agency, Randy Nicolas of the Provincial Resiliency Office stated in an interview that there will be an increased movement of air, land, and maritime assets during this period. He assured the public not to be alarmed, as this activity forms part of the Balikatan exercise. Nicolas also mentioned humanitarian activities scheduled for the communities, including dental and medical missions.
As a precautionary measure, a no-sail zone will be enforced during the live-fire maneuvers at the sand dunes. This restriction aims to ensure civilian safety during the high-intensity military drills. More than 17,000 soldiers from seven participating nations will take part in the exercises, covering land, sea, air, and cyberspace domains.
