Laoag Club Promotes Tennis with Free Coaching Clinics

Laoag: The province of Ilocos Norte, in collaboration with the local club Tennis on Wheels Philippines, is making strides to foster tennis talent through the AMB tennis clinic, which recently offered free coaching sessions at Marcos Stadium from March 26 to 28. The initiative aims to inspire and develop future tennis stars akin to Alexandra Eala, who has brought international acclaim to the Philippines with her performances in major tennis events.

According to Philippines News Agency, the next round of free coaching sessions is scheduled for May 27 to 29. Ilocos Norte 2nd District Representative Eugenio Angelo Barba, whose office organized the clinic, emphasized the potential long-term benefits of establishing tennis clubs in the province. By doing so, they can seek membership with the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta), granting them voting rights and the opportunity to host national tournaments locally.

Barba also highlighted the importance of involving adult participants and parents in the sport to further promote tennis among children. The clinic has garnered attention from young players like Joy Lucas, 17, who expressed her enjoyment and motivation from participating in the sport alongside her teammates. Lucas is currently preparing for the Region 1 Athletic Association competition in Candon City, Ilocos Sur, scheduled from April 5 to 11.

Another participant, Ivy Manuel, a 12th-grade student, shared her renewed interest in tennis after initially shifting to taekwondo. The free coaching sessions at the clinic have significantly improved her skills, particularly her forehand.

The efforts of Ilocos Norte and Tennis on Wheels Philippines aim to build a thriving tennis community in the region, providing opportunities for young athletes to pursue the sport and potentially achieve national and international success.
