Manila: Adamson University blanked University of the Philippines, 5-0, Monday in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 88 softball finals series at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila. The Lady Falcons are set to aim for a league-record 13th consecutive title in Friday's Game 2 at 9 a.m.
According to Philippines News Agency, Adamson's dominant performance was driven by Glory Alonzo, the league's best pitcher, who led the charge with eight hits against UP's defense. Three runs across the second and third innings proved sufficient as Alonzo anchored Adamson's defense, neutralizing the UP bats.
Fighting Maroons' Angel Pascual and Danica Aquino managed to reach base, but the defense quickly recovered, catching Pascual at home. Alonzo then struck out Martine Francisco and helped retire Generose Torremocha to end the inning.
"Our start wasn't great, but they had presence of mind and heart," said Ana Santiago, Adamson's long-time coach. Despite a challenging situation with no outs, the team managed to hold their ground, showcasing their belief and determination.
Alonzo pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout, striking out six UP batters while benefiting from an error-free defense. Adamson's offensive output included four hits that led to three crucial runs in the second and third innings.
Reyae Villamin initiated the attack with a lead-off single, which MJ Libaton converted into the game's first run. In the third inning, Neomay Mahinay's double drove in Roma Mae Cruz, and she later scored from a hit by captain Mae Langga.
Villamin led with two hits and two RBIs, while Langga and Libaton added two hits each. UP threatened in the sixth inning, but shortstop Mea Tubongbanua's catches ended their chances, securing Adamson's victory.
The Fighting Maroons' offensive was limited to three hits, contrasting with their 6-3 win in the first round. KC Valino allowed three earned runs in the second and third innings.
