Manila: Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson on Sunday stated that any potential dialogue with the Chinese Embassy regarding the West Philippine Sea (WPS) will not involve relinquishing Philippine territory or succumbing to external pressures.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lacson clarified that the proposed discussions, which he earlier suggested following Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan's indication of willingness to engage with Philippine leaders, would primarily focus on establishing clear lines of communication. The talks would not address contentious issues such as the ownership of disputed areas. Lacson emphasized the importance of direct dialogue to prevent misunderstandings and fiery exchanges on social media, reiterating that there would be no concessions of territory merely to ease tensions.
Lacson expressed appreciation for Senator Erwin Tulfo, the newly appointed chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, for organizing a meeting with embassy officials. He mentioned that Tulfo might provide a briefing to fellow senators during their scheduled caucus following his meeting.
Additionally, Lacson highlighted the necessity for unity among lawmakers before engaging with foreign counterparts, pointing out that public disputes among Filipinos concerning the WPS issue project a negative image. He stressed the importance of presenting a united front, stating that internal conflicts over Philippine territory or areas within its exclusive economic zone are unseemly and counterproductive.
