Lacson ‘99%’ Certain to Return as Blue Ribbon Chair, Says Sotto

Manila: Senate President Vicente Sotto III announced that Senator Panfilo Lacson is almost certain to return as the chairperson of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee. Lacson had previously stepped down amid criticisms regarding his management of the flood-control investigation.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sotto discussed in an interview with One PH that Lacson is open to resuming his leadership of the committee. This decision comes after Lacson’s reflection on past hearings and his belief that several key issues remain unresolved. Sotto expressed optimism, stating, “I think it’s a yes. We’ll be having a Blue Ribbon Committee meeting soon. I think it’s very positive at this point.”

When questioned about Lacson’s potential reinstatement, Sotto confidently replied, “99 percent.” Lacson has reportedly reviewed past hearings to determine what issues still need addressing. He believes that unresolved matters could aid the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), the Ombudsman, and other judicial bodies in their investigations.

Sotto indicated that Lacson’s reconsideration was influenced by appeals from fellow senators and public demand. He emphasized the significance of enhancing the proposed Independent People’s Commission to support the ICI’s efforts, noting that Lacson’s leadership would play a crucial role in advancing pending corruption cases.

Senator Erwin Tulfo, the committee’s vice chair and acting head, has welcomed the possibility of Lacson’s return. “He was glad that Senator Lacson is considering returning,” Sotto noted.

Lacson had resigned from his position earlier this month, aiming to allow another member to take over after some colleagues expressed dissatisfaction with his handling of the flood control projects probe. Sotto concluded by stating that the Blue Ribbon Committee will convene soon to formally discuss the leadership issue.
