San fernando: The provincial government of La Union is set to embark on significant infrastructure and healthcare projects, including the enhancement of its seaport, the establishment of a mental health facility, and the development of a tourism center. Governor Mario Eduardo Ortega announced these initiatives on Wednesday, highlighting the strategic goals set for the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, the port development is designed to accommodate bulk carriers and potentially cruise ships. This upgrade aims to transform the port into a hub that will not only support economic activities but also showcase the diverse tourist attractions in La Union, Pangasinan, Cordillera, and Ilocos Sur. Governor Ortega emphasized the importance of improving port services, which, alongside the airport, will bolster the region's connectivity and appeal.

In addition to the port upgrade, plans are underway to establish a mental rehabilitation center in collaboration with the Department of Health and a regional medical center. This facility will address the mental health needs of the Ilocos Region. Furthermore, five new ambulances will be distributed across various towns, and rescue operations will be enhanced through additional training and the acquisition of a jet ski for sea rescues.

The provincial government also intends to set up a tourism center in San Juan town. This initiative aims to promote La Union's tourist sites while developing sustainable tourism offerings, such as camping and hiking trails. Governor Ortega outlined these targets, indicating that the projects are not only economically driven but also aimed at boosting tourism and healthcare services in the region.
