Kanlaon Volcano Emits Ash, Residents Advised to Stay Alert

Bacolod: The Negros Occidental disaster office advised residents near Kanlaon Volcano to remain alert for possible ashfall Monday after the volcano emitted ash twice in the morning.

According to Philippine News Agency, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office issued the caution following ash emissions around 10:09 a.m. and 11:31 a.m. directed southwest. These emissions come after three ash emission events recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Sunday.

Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, indicating a moderate level of unrest with possible sudden phreatic eruptions. Phivolcs prohibits entry within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

The Department of Health in the Negros Island Region has reminded residents to wear masks, close doors and windows, and stay hydrated if ashfall occurs. These measures are crucial to protecting public health during volcanic activity.

The volcano's initial explosive eruption in June 2024 and subsequent activity mainly affected Bago City, La Carlota City, La Castellana town, and Canlaon City. Residents in these areas are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for any further developments.
