Japan to Invite Defense Officials from Pacific Island Nations Starting in Fiscal 2026

Tokyo: Japan will invite young and mid-level defense officials from Pacific Island countries starting in fiscal 2026, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced on Monday. Koizumi unveiled the initiative during a lecture at a meeting held in Tokyo with defense ministers from 14 Pacific Island nations, including Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

According to Philippines News Agency, the initiative comes in response to China's growing presence in the South Pacific. Koizumi emphasized the importance of cooperation between Japan and the island nations in various fields, particularly in strengthening cybersecurity. The meeting marked the third occurrence of such gatherings since their inception in 2021, with seven members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including Indonesia and the Philippines, participating as observers for the first time.

Japan's plan to host defense officials will initially involve three countries, including Fiji. The officials are expected to engage in exchanges of opinions and participate in troop inspections during their week-long stay in Japan. Koizumi urged the island countries to strengthen their bonds and work towards building a self-driven, resilient region together.
