Manila: The Japanese government has expressed its hopes that the recent parliamentary elections will pave the way for the formal establishment of a Bangsamoro Autonomous government, contributing to peace in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Japanese Embassy in Manila released a statement acknowledging that while several incidents of violence occurred during the election, the voter turnout was significant. The embassy emphasized Japan's strong hope that this election, a significant milestone in the ongoing Mindanao peace process, will result in peaceful and steady progress toward establishing the Bangsamoro Autonomous Government.

The Japanese government commended the efforts of all parties involved in facilitating the election, including the Commission on Elections, and recognized the contributions of Philippine government officials and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in advancing the Mindanao peace process. The statement highlighted Japan's long-standing support for this initiative, which has spanned more than three decades.

Japan, as a comprehensive strategic partner of the Philippines, reiterated its commitment to supporting both the Government of the Philippines and the Bangsamoro Transition Authority. The Japanese government is convinced that peace in Mindanao is integral to regional stability and has pledged to continue supporting the realization of a just and sustainable peace in Mindanao.

As part of its assistance, Japan dispatched an election observer mission led by Onishi Yohei, its Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, to oversee the conduct of the September 14 election.
