Japan and EU Initiate First Defense Industry Dialogue

Brussels: Japan and the European Union held their inaugural dialogue to enhance cooperation in the defense industry. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to fortify defense equipment supply chains and lessen reliance on the United States amidst a challenging global security environment.

According to Philippines News Agency, the dialogue convened at the EU headquarters in Brussels on Friday, drawing participation from over 30 Japanese companies and organizations, including Subaru Corp., Hitachi Ltd., and NEC Corp. Additionally, 20 European firms, such as Thales of France, Leonardo SpA of Italy, and Saab of Sweden, were present. The event also saw participation from startups with dual-use technologies seeking business opportunities.

Andrius Kubilius, a European Commission commissioner for defense and space, emphasized Japan's role as a "true like-minded partner" for the EU, highlighting the significance of collaboration in defense and economic security. Japanese state minister of economy, trade, and industry Toshiro Ino expressed hope that the dialogue would evolve into a "platform" for partnership between Japan and the EU, particularly within their private sectors, paving the way for cooperative projects.
