Int’l Mountain Bike Challenge Kicks Off in Surigao Norte

Surigao norte: About 200 cyclists from various countries, including the Philippines, have gathered in Surigao Norte for the start of the Union Cycliste Internationale Mountain Bike (UCI MTB) Continental and Junior Series 2026. The international cycling event, known as 'Kabibo Banjak Alegria (KBA) International 2026,' is set to take place from June 5-7. 'Kabibo' translates to joy and fun, while 'banjak' means to pedal.

According to Philippines News Agency, since May 29, at least 45 foreign athletes have registered for the competition. "The first participant to arrive here on May 29 was from Bangladesh. Since his arrival, he has explored the area, especially the event's trails," stated Luniza Garrido, the tourism officer of Alegria, during an interview on Friday. Data from the Alegria tourism office shows that athletes have arrived from various countries, including Taiwan, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Japan, Guam, and India.

This week, three UCI commissaires or game officials have been present in the town to evaluate the event's duration, trails, and race course. The 3.5-kilometer lap comprises 5 percent concrete roads and 95 percent unpaved terrain, featuring ascents, descents, and built obstacles. The Men Elite Category will cover seven laps, while other categories such as Men Under 23, Men Junior, and Women Elite have varying lap requirements.

Local officials are optimistic about the potential economic and tourism benefits of hosting the event. Mayor Dominador Esma Jr. highlighted the local government's investment in eco-tourism and eco-sports, noting increased demand for accommodations since participants began arriving. The Department of Tourism (DOT) 13 (Caraga) also expressed confidence that Alegria town will gain recognition as a premier cycling and adventure destination, attracting more events and tourists. "With the ongoing competitions, our local riders will gain exposure to world-class competition, enhancing their skills and international rankings," stated DOT-13.
